Tips for Visiting
Whether you are a lifelong member or a first-time visitor, we ask that you help in maintaining a safe environment for both visitors and works of art. Thanks!

  • Help us preserve the art – please do not touch the objects on display.
  • Cell phone use is not allowed within the galleries. Should you need to make or receive a call, please step out of the gallery space.
  • Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Smoking is not allowed in the Museum, including the courtyards.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the gallery space unless carried inside a pocket or small bag. Eating and drinking is not allowed in the galleries.

Wheelchairs
Wheelchairs are available on a non-reserved, first-come first-served basis.

Bags, Packages and Umbrellas
For the safety of visitors, please note that MFA does not allow large bags and packages in the galleries. Size restrictions for bags and packages are posted in the lobby. You may check your bags at the front desk at no charge.

Strollers
Strollers are permitted in most areas – inquire at the Information Desk for gallery limitations. Oversize and jogging strollers are prohibited.

Photography and Video
Photography and video is not permitted in the Special Exhibitions. Photography is permitted in the Permanent Collection galleries – no flash and no tripods.

Sketching
Sketching is welcome in the galleries with dry media (pencil only). Copyists working with wet media must obtain permission. While sketching, please do not hinder visitor traffic flow in the galleries.

During periods of high attendance, the Museum reserves the right to make any necessary adjustments to this sketching policy.

First Aid
Inform the nearest Security Officer if you require first aid in the galleries.
